Government service (2024–2025)
Following the change of government in August 2024, Nahid Islam was sworn in as an adviser in the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus — one of the youngest people to hold such a position. He was assigned two portfolios: Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology (from 9 August 2024), and Information and Broadcasting (from 16 August 2024). He held both until his resignation on 25 February 2025.
During his tenure at the ICT ministry, reported reforms included efforts to lower mobile internet taxation to widen access, and initiatives to attract foreign investment into the technology sector. At Information and Broadcasting, his ministry oversaw the creation of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board.
Founding the National Citizen Party
On resigning from government in February 2025, Nahid became founding convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) — formed through the merger of the Students Against Discrimination platform and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee. In his inaugural address, he set out a "Bangladeshpontha" (Bangladesh-centred) political vision and called for a new constitutional settlement for what the party terms a "second republic."
Parliament and the Opposition Chief Whip role
Contesting the 2026 general election as the NCP's candidate for Dhaka-11, Nahid was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad. He was subsequently appointed the 13th Opposition Chief Whip, a senior role responsible for coordinating opposition members' parliamentary business.
